This blog is an attempt to chronicle my year in Mumbai – it’s meant to be an open travel journal and story for myself and for anyone else who enjoys getting lost in tales of culture shock and exploring the world.
The name is a little pun on my former life in New York and my new one here in Mumbai – for those unfamiliar, a lakh is a common term in India for 100,000 rupee. So the hope is that the name will give everyone as much of a chuckle as it gave me.
Dear Ali,
Just subscribed to you blog. Can’t wait for your next entry. Thanks for enabling me (us) to experience through your talanted writing and great photos/videos yours and Daniel’s experiences. love and miss you
Ali,
What a great idea. I can’t wait to see India through your eyes.
Hi Ali, Greetings from RI! It sounds like a great adventure. It sort of reminds me of our time in Korea. I used to invite the locals in for tea and they loved our sugar! I had someone to do laundry, but we cooked our own food which we bartered for. That took a long time! LOve, A Sue
The time difference between Mumbai and DC make it so that I often wake up with a new post in my inbox. yay!
Dearest Ali,
Love your blog. Can’t wait to read your version of Eat Pray Love when you get your book deal next year 🙂
hugs and kisses,
D
Hey!
I just stumbled on your blog and am having a lot of fun reading it! And love your choice of theme also 😉
I live in Bandra too and would love to meet up sometime to share experiences.
Hello!
I’m a Mumbaikar who is currently studying film in Los Angeles. I don’t know how I landed on your blog but I’m having a hard time leaving!
I’m ignoring my work as I read post after post laughing aloud at some and feeling my eyes moisten at others. I will be visiting Mumbai after a year and half in LA this December….I can hardly wait.
In the meanwhile, I shall read your blog 🙂
Cheers!
just thought i’d say hello!
i just realised that over the past several months, we’ve been less then a kilometre away from each other, ’cause i study at Sion hospital while you film in Dharavi. we’re literally on opposite ends of a bridge. and i frequently come to Dharavi to visit the families assigned to me by the Preventive and Social Medicine Department of my college.
if i’m not mistaken, you’ve posted that your film has progressed to the editing stage. but if you’re looking for more sources, i just heard about SNEHA(Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action) which is located at 60 feet road. their website is http://www.snehamumbai.org
good luck with your film!

Hi Ali,
I’m not sure how we stumbled onto your blog, but I thought you might be interested to learn that we are moving into your old flat at La Paloma this coming Thursday, the one with the lovely roof terrace! What a coincidence.
I hope you are enjoying being back in the US.
All the best,
Amy and Matt
